Chorlu

Chorlu is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The name of the village is also mentioned as “Chirpili”, “Bostanchi kharaba”. The provincial centre lies 25 km to the north of the town of Gumru, and at a height of 1,980 m above sea level. Until 1937, it had been under the subordination of the Amasiya (Aghbaba) district. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who gradually moved to Türkiye after the Armenians had been settled in the region.

The toponym was coined by adding the identifying suffix “-lu” to the Turkic ethnonym “chor” denoting “the village, settlement where the tribe Chor resides”.

The village was renamed “Lernatsk” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 November 1946 and further it was changed to “Lernagyugh” by the decree  dated 21 October 1967. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
