Chivandere was a village in the territory of the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and present-day Ararat province. It was located near the village of Chanakhchi and at the foot of Bazhunnu Mountain. The toponym was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 113 in 1873, 154 in 1886, 157 in 1897, 172 in 1914 and 389 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or deported from the village by Armenain armed units. Later, the village was abolished. At present, it is in ruins.
The toponym was coined by combining the word “chiva”, a phonetic variant of the Oghuz ethnonym “Yiva” and “dere” meaning “a narrow crooked gorge with steep sides” in Azerbaijani.
