Chirchir

Chirchir is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Yelenovka (Sevan) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. The provincial centre lies 35 km to the northwest of the town of Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo), on the shore of Lake Goycha, by the Zangi River, and at a height of 1,915 m above sea level. The village had been within the former district of Akhta (Hrazdan) until the former Sevan district was established, i.e. 31 December 1931. Another name for the village was Sutokulan. It was noted as Chirchir” in the works of Armenian authors, on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

In Azerbaijani dialects and local idioms and Turkic languages the sound replacement ş~ç is normal. The village was renamed “Varser” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 April 1946. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Gegharkunik province.
