Chiragli is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 18 km to the southwest of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,820 m above sea level. It had been within the district of Gumru (Leninakan) until 1937.
The Armenians were removed to the village from the Turkish provinces of Erzurum, Khnis (Hnis) and Mush in 1828–1829. It was noted in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The toponym was coined by adding the identifying suffix “-lı” to the ethnonym “Chirag” implying “a settlement, village belonging to the Chirag (Shirak-Sirak) tribe. One of the Gizilbash tribes is also “Chiraglar”.
The village was renamed “Jrarat” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
