Chilovkhanli is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 12 km to the south of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,540 m above sea level.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who moved to Türkiye after Armenians had been settled in the region. Other names for the village are stated as “Chilovkhan, Chlovkhanli, Chlovkhan, Jelokhan” in various sources.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the multi-generational family name “Chilovkhanli” of the Mughanli tribe.

The village was renamed “Beniamin” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
