Chapan is a river in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The river flows through the former village of Shahabli.
The hydronym was coined by adding the ending “-an” to the word “chap meaning in Turkic “a precipice, a ravine, a mountain chest, an elevation between mountains”, “a bare (without any vegetation) rocky or sandy slope”.
