Boyuk Deliler is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. It lies 24 m to the northwest of the town of Gamarli, by the canal flowing from the Garni River, and at a height of 835 m above sea level. It was marked as “Deliler” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, and as “Boyuk Deliler” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. Armenian authors refer to it as “the village of Deliler” in their works. The Armenian literature states that the village was founded in 1831. Actually, the historical truth has been distorted. Since, “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728 mentions the village of Deliler with an annual income of 20,000 akchas among the villages included in the Karni area.
Historically, the village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis. Armenians were settled in the village having been removed from the Khoy province of Iran in 1828–1829. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited also by 46 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 115 in 1873, 124 in 1886 and 134 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported having been exposed to genocide of Armenian armed units. Few Azerbaijanis managed to return to the village following the establishment of Soviet power in the present-day Armenian territory. The village was inhabited by five Azerbaijanis in 1922, four in 1926 and four Azerbaijanis in 1931. In the mid 1930s the Azerbaijanis living in the village were completely driven out by the order of the Armenian state. At present, only Armenians live there.
The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-lər” denoting plurality to the “Tele (Deli)” ethnonym of the Old Turkic tribe. The word “boyuk” in the initial position denotes a distinguishing feature.
It was renamed “Dalar” by decision of the Armenian SSR Presidium of the Supreme Soviet dated 3 January 1935. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
