Beykend is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Hamamli (Spitak) district, and currently in the Lori province. The provincial centre lies 33 km to the northwest of the town of Boyuk Garakilsa (Vanadzor), by the Garangu River, and at a height of 1,680 m above sea level. Although it was mentioned as “Beykend” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” which is the Ottoman source from 1728, the 19th-century Russian sources and the works by the Armenian authors mentioned it as “Bekant”.
In accordance with the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the original inhabitants of the village, the Azerbaijanis, moved to Türkiye following the removal of Armenians and their settlement in the territory of the Iravan Khanate. Armenians were removed from the Turkish province of Mush, and Iran and settled in the village.
The toponym was coined by combining the word “bey” (bek) used in Old Turkic in the meaning of “a hill, upperland, peak” and the word “kend”. It is an orotoponym.
The village was renamed “Mets Parni” in 1920. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Lori province.
