Bayandur is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 16 km to the southwest of the town of Gumru, and at a height of 1,480 m above sea level. It had been under the subordination of the Gumru (Leninakan) district until 1937. It was mentioned as “Bayandirli” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”.

Until 1828 the village had been inhabited by Azerbaijanis. In 1828–1830 Armenians were removed from Kars, Mush and Erzurum and settled there. At present, only Armenians live in the village.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the name of the Old Turkic “Bayandur” tribe, denotes “a village inhabited by the Bayandur tribe”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
