Ashaghi Turkmenli

Ashaghi Turkmenli is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Uchkilsa (Echmiadzin, Vagharshapat) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 35 km to the southeast of the town of Serdarabad (Armavir), by the Boyuk Garasu River, and at a height of 835 m above sea level. It was marked as “Turkmenli” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The Armenians were removed from the Baharli village of the Surmali province of Türkiye and settled in the village in 1915–1920.

The toponym was coined from the word “ashaghi” denoting a distinguishing feature in Azerbaijani and the Gizilbash ethnonym “Turkmen” with the suffix of possession “-li”, implies “a village inhabited by the Turkmen tribe”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed “Lusagyugh”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
