Ashaghi Talin is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 48 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,585 m above sea level. Another name for the village is “Turk Tatar Talini”. The village was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 248 in 1873, 253 in 1886, 418 in 1897, 376 in 1908, 400 in 1914 and 471 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the village was exposed to Armenian aggression and its indigenous people, the Azerbaijanis, were deported from their historical-ethnic land; the Armenians, who had been deported from Türkiye, were settled there instead. At present, Armenians and Yezidi Kurds live in the village.
The toponym was coined from the word “ashaghi” denoting a distinguishing feature in Azerbaijani toponymy and the word “tal” used in Turkic in the sense of “a willow tree, a willow bush” as well as the word “in” used in Turkic in the sense of “a hut, cave, den”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Nerkin Talin”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
