Altuntakht

Altuntakht was a village in the territory of the Goycha area of the historical Iravan Khanate, and present-day Gegharkunik province. In accordance with the newly-established administrative-territorial division in the nineteenth century, the village was integrated into the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, the former Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo) district. The name of the village was mentioned in the epos “The Book of Dede Korkut”, “Qazan bey took his army, rescued his family and treasure. He built his house in Altin takht again.” The name of the village was noted in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728 and in “Jambr” of Simeon Yerevantsi, the Catholicos of Echmiadzin from 1763 to 1780. The village was abolished in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At present, the village is in ruins.

The toponym was coined by adding the word “takht” which means “a flat place on the mountain peak” to the word “altun” meaning “golden, red”.
