Alikhan

Alikhan is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 19 km to the northeast of the town of Gumru. Until 1870 only Azerbaijanis had lived there. In 1878 Armenians removed from the Turkish provinces of Mush and Erzurum were settled there.

The toponym was coined by combining the personal name “Ali” and the word “khan” used in Turkish to denote a title.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, it was renamed “Atarbekyan” and further it was changed and became “Getik”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
