Aligulushen

Aligulushen is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. It lies 8 km to the east of the town of Gorus. Other names for the village were Aligulukend, Ashaghi Aligulu, Aliguluushaghi. The settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who gradually left it after Armenians had been settled in the region in 1831. Being founded by a person named Aligulu, the village was called “Aligulushen/ Aligulukend”.

The first component of the toponym consists of Aligulu, a personal name and the second component is the word “shen” used in Turkish in the sense of “a construction, village, community, home”.

The village was renamed “Azatashen” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 1 June 1940. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
