Alayaz is a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor) district, and currently in the Vayots Dzor province. The provincial centre lies 15 km to the southeast of the town of Keshishkend, on the bank of the Yoghunsu River, the right branch of the Alayaz River. The village was mentioned as “Alayaz” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728, as “Alagoz” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus and as Alagöz, Alayaz in the almanac “The Collection of the Data on the Caucasus”. It is mentioned as “Alayaz”, “Alagez”, “Alagoz” in Armenian sources. There are 11th–13th-century historical monuments related to Azerbaijanis in the village.

The village was inhabited by 32 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 223 in 1873, 356 in 1886, 412 in 1897, 524 in 1904, 576 in 1914, 322 in 1916 and 97 Azerbaijanis in 1919. In 1918–1919 the village was exposed to Armenian aggression and Armenians were settled in it. The inhabitants of the village returned to their own homes after Soviet government had been established in the present-day Armenian territory. The village was inhabited by 180 Azerbaijanis, 91 Armenians in 1922, 267 Azerbaijanis in 1926, 353 Azerbaijanis in 1931, 499 Azerbaijanis in 1959, 884 Azerbaijanis in 1970, 963 Azerbaijanis in 1979. In 1988 Azerbaijanis were deported from their historical-ethnic territories by the state of Armenia. At present, Armenians live in the village.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym “Alagoz”. The first reference to the Turkic tribe Alagoz is encountered in Vambery’s information (1863) on Turkic tribes.

At a distance of 600-700 m from the village of Alayaz, the 14th-century Akhi Tavakkul Lodge is located.There are several tombstones with ancient Jewish and Aramite inscriptions on them in the territory of the village.

The village was renamed “Yeghegis” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Vayots Dzor province.
