Alagoz

Alagoz (Alayaz) is a mountain in the Iravan governorate, on the border of the present Aragatsotn and Shirak provinces. Its height is 4,090 m. It is located 40 km to the northwest of the city of Iravan. Alagoz Mountain, a summer pasture of Azerbaijani Turks, is of volcanic origin and has a large fissure on its summit.

This toponym consists of two parts: the Old Turkic words “ala” and “kez” (gez). The first component of the toponym – “ala” means “wide, big” in Turkic languages. The second component of the toponym – “gyoz” (gez) means a sunken place in a mountain.

At present, the mountain is renamed “Aragadz”.
