Aghkilsa

Aghkilsa is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 24 km to the southwest of the town of Ijevan. It was within the Polad Ayrimvillage of the province. Until 1930 it had been within the administrative division of the Dilijan district.

The village was inhabited by 115 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 130 in 1904 and 151 Azerbaijanis in 1919. In March 1919 the Azerbaijanis were deported and exposed to massacre by Armenians. After Soviet power had been established in the present-day Armenian territory, the Azerbaijani survivors of the village managed to return to their homes. The village was inhabited by 132 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 114 in 1926, 166 in 1931, 187 in 1959 and 70 Azerbaijanis in 1987. In November-December 1988 the Azerbaijanis were deported from the village at the state level being ousted from their historical-ethnic lands.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “agh” used as a colour and the word “kilsa” (church) meaning a religious temple. The name of the village was derived from the name of the white (Alban) church in the vicinity.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991, the village was renamed “Jermakavan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
