Aghkilsa was a village in the territory of the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and present-day Ararat province. It was located to the east of Vedi, at the foot of Sighnakh Mountain, in the valley of Zimmi and on the bank of the Vedi River. It was noted as “Aghjakilsa” in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” compiled in 1590, as “Aghkilsa” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728 and marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was inhabited by 111 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 152 in 1886, 165 in 1897, 563 in 1904, 574 in 1914 and 259 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The population of the village was completely deported or massacred in 1918–1920 and the village was abolished. At present, the village lies in ruins.
The toponym is coined by combining the words “agh” meaning “the white colour” and “kilsa” on the basis of the name of an Alban temple.
