Aghakichik

Aghakichik is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 58 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, by the Mastara River, at a height of 1,750 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. The name of the village is mentioned mainly as Ahagchi in the works of Armenian authors.

The village was inhabited by 160 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 257 in 1886, 301 in 1897, 359 in 1904, 383 in 1914 and 337 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the population of the village was deported from their historical- ethnic territories or massacred through Armenian aggression. Following this, the Armenians who were removed in 1915–1916 from the Turkish provinces of Sasun, Taron, Mush, Alashkirt, Erzurum and Kars and from the province of Khoy of Iran were settled there in 1918. At present the village is inhabited by Armenians.

The toponym was formed from the words “agha” and “kichik”, denoting “a village belonging to a young nobleman”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, it was renamed as “Zovasar”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
