Afandi

Afandi is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Hamamli (Spitak) district, and currently in the Lori province. Hamamli (Spitak) is located 5-7 km to the southeast, on the right branch of the Pambak River, between the village of Gursali (Arjahovit) and the village of Saral (Nor Khachakap). Until 1937 when the district of Hamamli was established, it had been within the district of Boyuk Garakilsa (Gugark). It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited only by 238 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1905–1906 the village was exposed to aggression by Armenian armed units, and the Azerbaijanis were massacred or deported from their historical-ethnic territories. The Armenians removed from Türkiye in 1915- 1918 were settled there. In 1926, after the establishment of Soviet power in the present-day Armenian territory, 10 Azerbaijanis lived in the village. In 1930 they were ousted from the village. Now only Armenians live there.

The toponym was coined on the basis of a personal name “Afandi”.

It was renamed “Karadzor” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 April 1946. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Lori province.
