Karvansara

Karvansara was a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Garanlig (Martuni) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. It was located 10-12 km to the southeast of the settlement of Garanlig, near the village of Madina and on the bank of the Ayrichay. The name of the village was noted as “Ayrichay Karvansara” and “Ayrija Karvansara” in the works of Armenian authors.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 168 in 1873, 205 in 1886, 309 in 1897, 341 in 1904, 441 in 1914 and 294 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, some of the inhabitants returned to their own lands. The village was inhabited by 78 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 45 in 1926 and 80 Azerbaijanis, 69 Armenians, 29 Kurds in 1931. Armenians were settled in the village in 1928–1930. In accordance with the decision of he USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowlands of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijani population of the village was forcibly deported to Azerbaijan. Later, the village was abolished.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “karvansara” meaning “a building on a trade road”.
