Ardaraz was a village in the territory of the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor) district, and present-day Vayots Dzor province. It was located to the west of the village of Yelpin, near the village of Gozluja. The name of the village was noted as “Artaras”, “Artaraz”, “Artarakh”, “Artaraq”, “Ardalas” in sources.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 30 in 1831, 219 in 1873, 304 in 1886, 332 in 1897, 353 in 1904, 388 in 1914 and 507 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were exposed to the aggression of Armenian armed formations and deported in 1918. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the Azerbaijanis who survived managed to return to their native lands. The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 114 in 1922, 120 in 1926 and 151 Azerbaijanis in 1931. The village was abolished in 1939–1940.
The toponym was coined by combining the words “art” meaning “a mountain pass, a hill” and “alas” (originally “alan”) meaning “an open space, a glade, a clearing” in Turkic.
