Ilanchalan is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, in the present Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 8-9 km to the north of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,611 m above sea level, on the right bank of the Abaran River. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who gradually left it following the settlement of Armenians in the region.

The toponym was coined by combining the noun “ilan” (a snake) and the participle “chalan” (stung by) in the Azerbaijani language. In 1920 the village was renamed “Artashavan”.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Aragatsotn province.
