Suvaranats

Suvaranats is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the Yelizavetpol Governorate (Ganja), later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. It is located at a distance of 35 km from the town of Gorus. The name of the village is mentioned in as “Suvari” Azerbaijani sources. After the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was included in the administrative territory of Armenia.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, but following the settlement of Armenians there, its population gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym “Suvar”. “-ants” at the end of the toponym is the identifying suffix in Armenian and similar to the identifying suffix “-lı” in Azerbaijani. Due to this, Suvarants means a place of the Suvar tribe. Currently, the name of the settlement in the official documents in Armenian is given as “Svarants”.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
