Gunbaz was a village in the territory of the Abaran uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ashtarak district, and present-day Aragatsotn province. The name of the village was noted as “Gunbazli” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”.
The village had been inhabited by Azerbaijanis until 1828. After the Treaty of Turkmanchay the Armenians removed from Türkiye were settled in the village in 1829–1830. The village was abolished in the 1850s. At present, it is in ruins.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “gunbaz” meaning “a dome- shaped roof, a dome”.
