Inakli is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ashtarak district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre is located 12 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, on the right bank of the Abaran River, at a height of 1,650 m above sea level. It was marked as “Inakli mazrasi” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, and as “Inakli” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. In their works Armenian authors also indicate the name of the village as “Enakli”, “Inoghlu”.
Until 1828 the village had been inhabited by Azerbaijanis. In 1828–1830 the Azerbaijanis were deported, and being removed from the Iranian provinces of Khoy and Salmas and the Turkish province of Van, Armenians were settled there.
The toponym was coined by adding the identifying suffix “-li” to the ethnonym “Inak”, one of the Oghuz tribes, and means “a place of residence belonging to the tribe Inak”. The ancient Turkic word “inak” means “trusted”, “dear, beloved”. In Khiva and Bukhara dialects, the word “inak” was used as “fatherhood” to mean “a tribal chief”, “a secret adviser to the khan”, “a leader of a province or city”. It is an ethnotoponym.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 1 December 1948, the village was renamed “Antarut”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
