Argov

Argov is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ashtarak district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 11 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, on the bank of the Galasiz River, at a height of 1,630 m above sea level. It was mentioned as “Argov” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, as “Ergov” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. The Armenian literature indicates that the village was founded in 1831. Actually, this is distorting the historical truth. Since, in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728 the village of Argov was mentioned in relation to the timar under Ahmad’s name within the Karpi area. The annual income of the village was indicated as 4,500 akchas.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 54 in 1831, 237 in 1873, 337 in 1886, 380 in 1897, 280 in 1908, 721 in 1914, 646 in 1916, 280 in 1918 and 218 Azerbaijanis in 1919. In 1919 Azerbaijanis were driven out of the village having been exposed to aggression by Armenian armed units. In 1919–1920 Armenians were removed there from Türkiye. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their ancestral territories after Soviet power had been established in the present-day Armenian territory. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 58 Azerbaijanis in 1922 and 25 Azerbaijanis in 1926. In 1929–1930 Azerbaijanis were completely deported. At present, only Armenians live in the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “er” (or) used in Turkish in the sense of “brave” and the Gypchag ethnonym “gov” (kov) denoting “a village belonging to a brave tribe of Gov”.

The name of the settlement is written in Armenian as “Orgov” in offical documents. According to the new law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
