Gaygulu Duzkend is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 34 km to the north of the town of Gumru, at a height of 2,030 m above sea level.

Following the settlement of Armenians in the territory of the Iravan Khanate according to the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the Azerbaijanis living in the village moved to Türkiye. The name of the village was changed following the settlement of Armenians and marked as “Duzkharaba”. It is also marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus as “Duzkharaba”.

The toponym was coined by combining the personal name “Gulu”, the words “duz” and “kend” denoting a relief, and the ethnonym “Gayi” from the ancient Oghuz tribes, and means “a village established by Gulu from the Gayi tribe”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 November 1946, the name of the village was changed to “Hartashen”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
