Derekoy is a village in the Aleskandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies at a distance of 49 km from the town of Gumru, at a height of 2,150 m above sea level.
The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis. After the 1840s Armenians settled there.
The toponym was coined by combining the word “dere” used to denote “a deep burrow between two mountains” in Azerbaijani and the word “koy” meaning “a village” in Turkish. It is an orotoponym.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 November 1946, it was renamed “Saragyugh”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
