Kechili

Kechili is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gurdugulu (Hoktemberyan) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 28 km to the northeast of the town of Serdarabad (Hoktemberyan, Armavir), adjacent to the Araz River, at a height of 900 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Kechili” which is a branch of the ethnonym “Gayi” of the Oghuz Turkic tribe. A branch of the Kangars is called “Kechili”. The “Kechilis” living on the right bank of the Araz River crossed into Nakhchivan during the Safavids period and joined the Kangar people. Also, another branch of the Oghuz Gayi tribe was called the “Gara kechili”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Armenian SSR dated 4 April 1946, the village was renamed “Mrgashat”. According to the law “On Administrative-Territorial Division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
