Chinarli

Chinarli is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Shamshaddin (Berd) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 78 km to the east of the town of Karvansara (Ijevan), and at a height of 750 m above sea level.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis, who gradually left it after Armenians had been settled in the region. Along with the Armenians, four Azerbaijanis lived there in 1926. At present, only Armenians live in the village.

The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-lı” to the name of a plane tree “chinar”. It is mentioned as “Chinari” in the works of Armenian authors.

At present, the name of this settlement is indicated as “Chinari” in the official documents in Armenian. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
