Garaburun

Garaburun is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 56 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at the foot of Alagoz Mountain, at a height of 2,000 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the region, the population moved to Türkiye.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “gara” used in the Turkish language to mean “big, large” and the word “burun”, which implies “protruding or extending towards the water”, “a mountain ridge, mountain branch, steep rock”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 31 July 1950, the name of the village was changed to “Karmrashen”, and by decision of 21 January 1965, it was renamed “Karakert”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
