Alagoz is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, in the present Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 20 km to the northeast of the town of Armavir (Serdarabad), at a height of 915 m above sea level. After the Armenians, who had been removed from their previous location, were settled in the territory of the Iravan khanate according to the Treaty of Edirne (1829), the Azerbaijani residents of the village moved to Türkiye. The Armenians were removed to the village from the Khoy province of Iran in 1828–1829.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the name of the Turkic Alagoz tribe.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian Republic dated 31 July 1950, the village was renamed “Aragats”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
