Sultanabad was a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, in the present Ararat province. It was located to the southwest of Alagoz Mountain. Another name for the village was “Mahammadabad”.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 49 in 1873 and 22 Azerbaijanis in 1897. The village was devastated as a result of attacks and massacre committed by Armenian armed units in 1905–1906.
The toponym was coined by combining the personal name “Sultan” and the word “abad” to denote “the village built by Sultan”.
