Mastara

Mastara is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 58 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,750 m above sea level. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

In 1828–1830, 138 Armenians from Türkiye were settled in the village. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 7 Azerbaijanis in 1831 and 18 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1905–1906 the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian militants. At present, the village is inhabited by Armenians.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “mes” (mas) used in Turkic to mean “a woodless mountain”, “a southern area of the mountain” and the word “dara” (“tara”) (a valley).

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
