Garagula

Garagula is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, in the territory of the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 71 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, 10 km to the northwest of Alagoz Mountain, at a height of 1,315 m above sea level.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “gara” used in Old Turkic to mean “big, large, tall” and the word “gula” used to mean “the northern, slope of the mountain where the rays of the Sun do not reach”. It is structurally a compound toponym coined on the basis of a relief.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 November 1946, the name of the village was changed to “Getap”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
