Aghjagala is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Uchkilsa (Echmiadzin, Vagharshapat) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 19 km to the northeast of the town of Serdarabad (Armavir), to the southwest of Alagoz Mountain and at a height of 885 m above sea level. It was marked in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” compiled in 1590, on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village had been solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis until 1828. Armenians were removed to the village in 1828–1830 from the Maku province of Iran. Along with the Armenians, it was also inhabited by 79 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 38 in 1873, 6 in 1886 and 31 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1918 the Azerbaijani inhabitants of the village were deported from their historical-ethnic territories by Armenian aggression.
The toponym was coined by combining the word “agh” meaning in Old Turkic “small, of low size, not too high” with the suffix -ca denoting the morphological feature of high degree in Azerbaijani and the word “gala” which together mean “a village next to a small, low fortress”. It is a toponym with a complicated structure formed on the basis of a relief.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Tsakhgalanj”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
