Kurakan

Kurakan was a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Uchkilsa (Echmiadzin, Vagharshapat) district, and currently in the Armavir province. Other names for the village were “Kurakend” and “Garaganli”. I. Shopen mentioned the village as “Kyurakendli”.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 47 in 1831, 298 in 1873, 426 in 1886, 498 in 1897, 470 in 1904, 556 in 1914 and 560 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. The Armenians removed from abroad were settled in the village. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the Azerbaijanis managed to return to their village. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 23 Azerbaijanis in 1922. Later, the village was abolished.
