Khunut was a village in the territory of the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and present-day Ararat province. Another name for the village was “Khnut Garaguyunlu”. It was located near the village of Kolanli, in the Jighin valley and near the Jighinsu River. The village was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 114 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 143 in 1886, 253 in 1897, 315 in 1904, 346 in 1914 and 213 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, a part of its inhabitants returned to their homes. The village was inhabited by 42 Azerbaijanis in 1922. In 1924–1925 the Azerbaijanis were removed from the village which was abolished. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by adding the plural ending “–ut” to the Old Turkic ethnonym “Hun/Khun”.
