Guney

Guney was a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Yelenovka (Sevan) district, and present-day Gegharkunik province. It was located 6 km to the east of the village of Golkend. The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis. After Armenians had been settled in the region, the inhabitants gradually left the village. The remains of the buildings and cemetery are still in the village.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “guney” meaning in Azerbaijani “the south, the side that gets sunlight” to denote “a village in the south”.
