Zeynalaghali

Zeynalaghali is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Yelenovka (Sevan) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. The provincial centre is located 25 km to the northwest of the town of Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo) and at a height of 1,925 m above sea level.

The village was inhabited by 45 Azerbaijanis in 1831 and six in 1897. In 1840 Russians, in 1918 Armenians were settled in the village. In the early 20th century the Azerbaijanis were expelled from the village by Armenian militants.

The toponym was coined by adding the identifying suffix “-li” to the personal name Zeynalagha to denote “a place or a village belonging to Zeynalagha”. In the 1850s the village was renamed “Aleksandrovka”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 22 February 1939, the village was renamed “Chkalovka”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Gegharkunik province.
