Kalara

Kalara is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Zangibasar (Masis) district, and currently in the Ararat province. It lies at a distance of 11 km from the Zangibasar settlement. The ancient name of the village was “Kalali/Kalaley”. It was marked as “Kelare” in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” compiled in 1590.

Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by six Azerbaijanis in 1897 and five Azerbaijanis in 1926. In 1928–1929, the Azerbaijanis were deported from the village. At present, the village is inhabited by Armenians.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkish word “kol” (kal) meaning “a shallow valley” and the word “ara” meaning “a limit”, “a border”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 1 December 1949, the village was renamed to “Gukasavan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
