Ipakli is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Zangibasar (Masis) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre is located 3 km to the northwest of the town of Gamarli, at a height of 840 m above sea level. Before the establishment of the Zangibasar district in 1969, it was a part of the Gamarli (Artashat) district. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 22 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 117 in 1873, 70 in 1886, 102 in 1897, 185 in 1908, 204 in 1914 and 123 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian armed forces. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their village following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia. The village was inhabited by 19 Azerbaijanis in 1922 and 14 Azerbaijanis in 1926. In 1930 the inhabitants of village were removed to the Arpavar village, and Armenians were settled there.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the name of the multi-generational “Ipakli” family.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed to “Masis settlement”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat district.
