Jafarabad is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Zangibasar (Masis) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 27 km to the northwest of the town of Gamarli and at a height of 877 m above sea level. There is Amir Saad Mausoleum in the village of Jafarabad situated in the vicinity of the city of Iravan. The mausoleum built in 1413 was constructed of red stones. Emir Saad, the first ruler of Chukhur Saad, one of the Garagoyunlu emirs, was buried in the mausoleum. The village had been within the district of Uchkilsa (Echmiadzin, Vagharshapat) until the district of Zangibasar was established in 1937. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The toponym was coined by combining the personal name “Jafar” and the Persian borrowing “abad” denoting “an organized place with a lot of constructions and all kinds of living conditions”. It is an antropotoponym. It was renamed “Argavand” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 4 April 1946. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
