Jabajali is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Zangibasar (Masis) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 18 km to the northwest of the town of Gamarli, at a height of 830 m above sea level. It had been within the former Gamarli (Artashat) district until the district of Zangibasar was established. It was mentioned in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” compiled in 1590 and on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. The sources indicate the name of the village as “Jabachalli” as well.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 275 in 1831, 252 in 1873, 254 in 1886, 264 in 1897, 355 in 1904, 575 in 1914, 355 in 1918 and 240 Azerbaijanis in 1919. In 1918–1919 the village was exposed to the aggression of Armenian armed units, and its inhabitants, the Azerbaijanis, were deported completely in 1919 from the village where the Armenians removed from Türkiye were settled. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their own village after Soviet power had been established in the present-day Armenian territory. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 101 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 115 Azerbaijanis in 1926, 131 Azerbaijanis in 1931. By the special order of the USSR government, the Azerbaijanis were deported in 1948–1949 from their historical-ethnic land to Azerbaijan and the Armenians removed from abroad were settled there. Presently, Armenians live there.
The toponym was coined by adding the identifying suffix “-li” to the name of the multi-generational family from the Turkic tribe “Gapigulu”.
The village was renamed “Jrahovid” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 27 February 1960, According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
