Ashaghi Nejili is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Zangibasar (Masis) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 20 km to the northwest of the Gamarli (Artashat) town, and at a height of 827 m above sea level. It had been within the former Gamarli district until 1969 when the former Zangibasar district was formed. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was inhabited by 411 Azerbaijanis and 114 Armenians in 1831, 1,183 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 1,147 Azerbaijanis in 1886, 1,178 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 1,430 Azerbaijanis in 1908, 1,573 Azerbaijanis in 1914, 1,074 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the village inhabitants were deported having been exposed to Armenian aggression. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their land only following the establishment of Soviet power in the present-day Armenian territory. The village was inhabited by 555 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 726 in 1926, and 379 Azerbaijanis in 1931. Also, the village was inhabited by 877 Azerbaijanis, Armenians and Kurds in 1939, 1,164 Azerbaijanis, Armenians and Kurds in 1959, 1,671 Azerbaijanis, Armenians and Kurds 1970, 1,818 Azerbaijanis, Armenians and Kurds in 1979. The Armenians were removed to the village in 1828 and 1946–1948 from Iran. In October-November 1988 the Azerbaijanis were deported by the state of Armenia from their historical-ethnic land. At present, Armenians live in the village.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “ashaghi” denoting a distinguishing feature and the Turkic ethnonym “Najli”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Sayat Nova”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
