Shagarda

Shagarda was a village in the territory of the Borchali uezd of the former Tiflis governorate, later in the former Jalaloghlu (Stepanavan) district, and present-day Tavush province.

The village was historically inhabited by Azerbaijanis. The Azerbaijanis, the original inhabitants of the village, migrated to Türkiye after Armenians had been removed and settled on the territory of the Iravan Khanate according to the Adrianople Treaty in 1829. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by five Azerbaijanis in 1897, 21 in 1916, 11 in 1922, 67 in 1926 and 24 Azerbaijanis in 1931. Later, the village was abolished.

The toponym was coined by combining the Turkic ethnonym “Sag” and the word “art” meaning “a mountain range” in Turkic, “a mountain, a mountain pass”, “a hill” and means “the place in the mountain pass or the mountanous territory where the saks roam”.
