Sarimsakhli

Sarimsakhli is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Boyuk Garakilsa (Gugark) district, and currently in the Lori province. It is located at a distance of 13 km from the town of Gugark, on the left bank of the Pambak River, at a height of 1,675 m above sea level. It is marked as “Sarmusakhli” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and after the settlement of Armenians in the region, the population gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined by adding suffix “-lı” to the plant name “sarimsag” (“garlic”). It is a phytoponym.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 4 April 1946, the village was renamed “Karaberd”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Lori province.
