Ashaghi Korpulu was a village in the territory of the Borchali uezd of the former Tiflis governorate, in the former Barana (Noyemberyan) district, and present-day Tavush province. It was located 15 km to the northeast of the settlement of Barana (Noyemberyan). After 1920 the Karimli and Damirchi clans built a new settlement at 1,5 km distance from the village of Korpulu. Since that year the village of Korpulu had been divided into Yukhari Korpulu and Ashaghi Korpulu villages. The village of Ashaghi Korpulu was built after 1920.

It was inhabited by 253 Azerbaijanis in 1922 and 319 Azerbaijanis in 1931. In accordance with the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR in the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijanis were deported to Azerbaijan and the village was abolished.

The toponym was coined by combining the words “ashaghi” which denotes a distinctive feature and “korpu” meaning “a structure carrying a road, path, railroad, or canal across a river, ravine, road, railroad or smth else”.
