Jalakend

Jalakend is a village in the Borchali uezd of the former Tiflis governorate, later in the former Barana (Noyemberyan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 31 km to the northwest of the town of  Karvansara (Ijevan).

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, who left it after Armenians had been settled in the region.

The toponym was coined by adding the word “kend” used in the meaning of “a settlement” to the word “jala” used in the Western group of Azerbaijani dialects in the sense of “a small wood, forest”, “a brushwood, a thick forest round the river”. “Jala” also means “a constantly watery, grassy place” in dialects. It is a toponym with a complex structure formed on the basis of a relief.

The village was renamed “Lichkazor”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
